As you go for a walk in French Flanders you will admire its remarkable architectural heritage. You will notice the bricks and stepped gables, which are distinctive elements of Flemish architecture. You will marvel at the elegant and impressive belfries. And of course, you will visit one of the many windmills, which are remarkable examples of our rural heritage.
THE SYMBOLS OF FLANDERS
Stones tell the history of French Flanders. The stepped gables, the coloured bricks, the wooden shutters painted in bright colours, the cottages scattered in a slightly undulating countryside: there is no question that you are in Flanders. However, you are not in a territory where everything is uniform: each city and village has its own heritage. Belfries, squares, fortifications and windmills are the many architectural symbols which you may discover in the charming cities and in sightseeing tours in the Pays de Flandre. Some of these treasures are listed as UNESCO world heritage sites.
